If you were born in the month of October you have a couple options for your birthstone. The traditional birthstone is the Opal, the more modern option is Tourmaline, and an alternative to Opal is Opalite. Both opal and tourmaline can come in a variety of different shades. The range of colors helps make October birthstone jewelry very versatile.

Opal is the traditional birthstone for October. Depending on the stone colors can vary between green, blue, pink, yellow, orange, and even fiery reds appear when you move the gemstone just right in the light. This is known as a play of color and it is one of the characteristics that makes opal so distinctive. No two pieces are exactly alike, which truly makes each individual piece one of a kind. Different locations in the world produce different colors of opal. It can be found in light or white opal, crystal opal, and dark or black opal. Some opals will also have a variance in the amount of glow they have as well, while some may be subtle others will produce dramatic rainbow flashes. Opal is a stone that is very sensitive. It is best to keep it out of prolonged sunlight and water. It has a Mohs hardness level of 5.5 to 6.5.

Tourmaline is a modern birthstone for October. It is come in a wide variety of colors that include: pink, green, blue, red, yellow, brown, black, and more. Some crystals even contain multiple colors within the same stone such as watermelon tourmaline. The variety in colors that tourmaline can be found in makes each piece one of a kind because depending on the cut and where the stone was found can alter the color and the intensity of the color. Tourmaline is a great stone for daily wear, it has a Mohs hardness 7 to 7.5 hardness.

Now this is one of our most popular things in Blue Bear! The Opalite! We offer a variety of rings, earrings, and pendants that showcase Opalite in them. Opalite is the man made version of Opal. It has the similar hardness of glass but the iridescent of opals. While the hardness is similar to real opals the big difference comes to being able to wear a jewelry piece and not have to worry as much about water exposure and sun exposure.

Now that you have all your options it is not easy to choose between them! Each stone offers its own luster and beauty. Choose a stone that speaks to you the most. The best part is that all three stones can be found at our store all set in beautiful Sterling Silver.
